Japanese Mothe’s Day

In Japan, Mother’s Day is traditionally associated with giving carnations. This tradition is deeply rooted in the symbolism of carnations, which are considered to represent the sweetness, purity, endurance, and strength of motherhood in Japanese culture.

The tradition of giving carnations on Mother’s Day in Japan started in the early 20th century. The founder of the Christian Bethel Orphanage, Reverend Yamada Kosaku, is credited with introducing the custom. He distributed these flowers to mothers as a sign of appreciation during a Mother’s Day service in the 1930s.

On Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in Japan, children often present their mothers with red or pink carnations. These colors typically symbolize warmth, love, and gratitude. It’s also common for children to make paper carnations at school as a heartfelt, handmade gift.

In addition, carnations are often used in floral arrangements and bouquets or worn as corsages. They are widely available around Mother’s Day, and many businesses, especially florists, feature carnations prominently in their Mother’s Day promotions and displays.

Overall, the carnation has become a significant symbol of Mother’s Day in Japan, representing children’s deep love and gratitude towards their mothers.
